Author(s): Esther Iveren SHAGBA
Abstract: Nigeria’s ethnolinguistic composition is enriched with three major indigenous languages, three foreign languages and over four hundred minor languages. In view of this, the country needs a visionary language policy to cater for communicative, interactive and pedagogic needs of its citizens. This paper has critically explored the nation’s language policies as enshrined in The Constitution and the National Policy on Education. The position of French language in Nigeria has also been spelt out. The method of data collection was both through primary and secondary sources. For primary sources, interviews were carried out and for secondary sources; books written by renowned linguists were consulted. The study concluded that there is no specific working document on Nigerian language policy save the few paragraphs in the constitution and the National Policy on Education (NPE). The researcher therefore, went ahead to suggest that a deliberate and working document pertaining the national language policy be formulated and adequate arrangement be put in place for French language to also thrive.
