Abstract: | This article examines the impacts of the English language on intellectual and sustainable development in Nigeria. The relevance of language for prolonged development of any nation cannot be neglected. The English language is the corner stone of sustainable development because of its relevance in our scheme of things. In our customized world of complicated information and communication technology (ICT), a universal language like English should be given adequate attention. This paper discusses the roles of English in all spheres of development. Its practical benefits for the individual and community are also highlighted. Opinions of other scholars are shown to support this truth. It also buttresses the functions of the language as an inevitable instrument for increased cultural understanding and unity in Nigeria. It discusses the relevance of the English language in intellectual development; national development; political development; religious development as well as the social well-being of the entire country. This paper also suggests that the English language should continue to act as a unifying factor in Nigeria. Additionally, our indigenous Nigerian languages should intensify efforts to develop so as to grow to the status of standard languages. |
