| Abstract: | This paper focuses on the use of language in Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun .Many people think of language use in speech and in writing as primarily a creative process but language is regular because any grammatically complete thought must fall into one of the four sentence types. The structures and types are flexible so as to enhance creativity. This study pays attention to layers of structural sentences-simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences used by Adichie. Investigation also reveals piles of functional sentences- declaratives ,interrogatives, imperatives and exclamatory sentences as well as rhetorical questions to satisfy the brain’s craving for novelty which Adiche used to portray the Nigerian civil war experiences of 1966 – 1970.She artistically uses language to communicate Biafra’s enormous struggle to establish an independent republic in Nigeria .The novel is analysed as a literary genre as well as a discourse type with specific emphasis on syntactic features in the primary text.. The analysis draws strength from the systemic functional grammar theory of language. |
