Abstract: Different theories of reading have been developed over the years for the teaching of reading at different levels of education. These theories stemmed out of the traditional/behavioural and the cognitive/constructive approaches to learning. This paper briefly highlights on the existing reading theories and extensively examines the schema theory, emphasizing its importance and relevance to the teaching of reading to the young learners of English as a second language (ESL). It presents and examines some inputs from the theory that both the English as a second language ( ESL) teachers and learners can utilize to make the teaching and learning of reading and reading comprehension meaningful. The authors argue that the application of schema theory in teaching reading could improve the techniques of teaching reading and as well enhance the reading proficiency of learners of English as a second language (ESL).
