Title: Presupposition and Entailment in Ammadarko’s Faceless
Author(s): Ijeoma Chidinma COOKEY & Michael Alozie NWALA
Abstract: This paper examines presupposition and entailment in Amma Darko’s Faceless. The sentences in the text exemplify natural speeches which are replete with different types of denotative and connotative meanings but which can be interpreted within the confines of presupposition and entailment. Using the truth conditional semantics theory propounded by Donald Davidson, the paper investigates the conditions for which the sentences in the text are given truth value; draws out the linguistic meaning from the meaning of the words that constitute the sentences and the connotative meaning from the context of usage. The paper concludes that any standard semantic theory must among other things account for presupposition and entailment which are necessary tools for the determination of meaning.
