Abstract: The heterogeneous nature of a state leads to multilingualism. In a country where there are diverse language groups, there are bound to be gains and strengths to harness these potentials. The government in place, for instance in Nigeria, formulates language policy that takes cognizance the interest of multilingual groups, cultural beliefs, custom and tradition with a view to giving them a sense of belonging. This paper attempts to examine language policy in multilingual contexts with a particular reference to Nigerian educational system, National policy on Education, its pedagogical implication to the teaching and learning of Nigerian languages. The study observed that government policy on language has strengthened the study of language in our school system. The study, therefore, concludes that language policy is a necessity for national integration and development.
