Title: Head And Movement Patterns Of Relative Clause Constructions In Idoma
Author(s): Jacob Umaru YAKUBU & Philip Manda IMOH
Abstract: The paper is a study of the syntactic headedness and movement of Ido?ma relative clauses. The motivation for the choice of the study hinges on the central role relative clauses play as the nucleus of complex sentences. Data gathered from both primary and secondary sources reveal that Ido?ma relative clauses are amenable to external headedness, internal headedness, headless and correlative. Some of the movement theories, principles and strategies that are productive in the analysis of Idoma relative clauses are: Wh-movement, Relativised Minimality, Empty Category Principle as well as Trace theory. From the data, relative clauses in Ido?ma serve as a link between the matrix NP and the rest of the sentence. This paper hopes to make a valid contribution to the study of Ido?ma linguistics in particular and syntax in general. It is also seen as a contribution to the syntactic study of African languages.
