Author(s): Nwaoke Emmanuel Emeka, Igwenyi Esther & Asuzu Ifeoma Priscilla
Abstract: This research sets out to reveal the power of poetry and explore the ideology of Amasike?s ?Egwurugwu? poem through the linguistic choices of the poet and thereby exposes the hidden pieces of information conveyed by the poem. To realize the set objectives, the study x-rays the social, economic and political inadequacies/inequalities of Nigerian Democracy through the linguistic features in ?Egwurugwu? an Igbo term for ?Rainbow?. The study adopts a desktop research method of data collection and analysis anchored on Critical Discourse Analysis which aims at locating and revealing opaque power structures in text and bringing them to the surface. The study observes that, just like the rainbow, Nigerian Democracy as a system of government is beautiful on the surface but a closer look reveals that some leaders are too exploitative since such leaders deny the lead the joy of the rainbow (democracy) and its beautiful colours (dividends of democracy). The study suggests that people should be wary while choosing their leader(s) in a democratic setup since the electorate may order for the rainbow and its beautiful colours but receive a fiery sun that blazes away at the ctizenry and acrosss the atmosphere. This study maintains that the possibilities of enjoying the dividends of democracy, as it is in practice in most countries in the western world, depends on who pilot(s) the affairs of the state.
