Author(s): Ogechukwu Juliet Okeke-Okoye & Abiola Are
Abstract: The study focused on developing children's literacy through a literature-based approach. Three research questions guided the study. The area of the study was Orumba North L.G.A in Anambra State. The research design was a descriptive survey. The population comprised teachers in all the government-owned early childhood development centers. A census sampling method was used to select the entire population for the study. An instrument titled "Childhood Literacy Development through a Literature-based Approach" was developed by the researchers and structured on a four point rating scale. The face and content validation of the instrument was conducted by three experts in the field of early childhood education, and the test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.81, determined using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. Mean scores were used to answer the research questions. The findings showed that teachers accepted using a literature-based approach, such as picture books, rhymes, children's novels, and storybooks in teaching, but they do not use audiovisual aids and book-based activities in literacy development. The researchers recommended that the government should provide literature-based teaching aids, such as audiovisual materials, television, and book-based activities, in children's education.
