Title: A Comparative Analysis of Morphological Diminutives in English and Igbo Languages

Abstract: The Igbo and English languages share similarities amidst differences. This study made a comparative analysis of morphological diminutives in Igbo and English. Its specific objectives are to compare Igbo and English morphological diminutives, and identify as well as describe features, similarities and differences between Igbo and English morphological diminutives. Exploratory survey design and descriptive qualitative method were employed along with content and thematic analyses, interpretive devices and analytic description. The analysis was guided by insights from morphological theory, particularly word formation processes, and supported by elements of contrastive analysis. Findings established include\ amidst similarities in their morphological processes of forming diminutives, the English and Igbo languages employ different morphological strategies for forming diminutives. The similarities include the use of suffixes for diminutive functions. Also, while English relies on suffixation and foreign borrowing, Igbo relies on derivational suffixes, prefixation, syllable reduction, reduplication, and compounding. The study concludes that morphological diminutives in the two languages have similarities and dissimilarities, and diminutives are generally used to convey similar concepts of smallness and affection. It recommends further studies on morphological diminutives in Igbo and English languages; and charges teachers to ensure that learners understand the differences and similarities existing between the two languages.
